Gaara's personality had gone through quite a few major changes during his life. As a child, shy and withdrawn, as a preteen, violent irrational and even psychotic. These days Gaara has mellowed a lot. He is still quiet, serious, and very stubborn. Also protective of his siblings though most people he keeps at a distance. Although he is always solemn he actually has a dry sense of humor, but it only appears once in a blue moon.

Gaara was born with the telekinetic ability to manipulate earth, which he used instinctively even as an infant. This, of course, was thanks to experimentation by Suna scientists before his birth as well as on his mother, Karura, before even that. Karura did not survive his birth.
Gaara's childhood was lonely. He was raised by the scientist who had created him as well as his uncle, Yashamaru, who hated him. It was decided that his powers made him too dangerous to allow him to interact with other children, or most other people. Gaara became emotionally withdrawn, all but silent, and consumed with a bitter loathing for everyone but himself. He eventually convinced himself that the sand was inhabited by the spirit of his dead mother trying to protect him.
As time went on Gaara learned to find pleasure, and eventually a reason to live, in annihilating the numerous fleshless that dot the landscape, or henshuu when he got the chance as well as anyone who threatened his existence. The singular focus gave him a blood lust which resulted in Gaara being merciless on the battlefield.
Once Gaara had enough control of his abilities to satisfy the scientists he was assigned to a team with his siblings. At first he treated the pair much as he did almost everyone, that is, he ignored them. Yet their constant presence and persistence in treating him as a human being, unlike anyone ever had before, had a profound effect on him. Though still relentless in battle, he developed a protectiveness for the two. Over the years this even extended to his home city although he still keeps most people at a great distance.

He's an insomniac. Love (愛, ai) is etched on his forehead. And he has no eyebrows.

It was dark. Which, to be honest, was quite normal for being underground. The only light came from two small vents allowing air from the surface to circulate, and the tiny pen light Gaara held. The tiny bulb's rays did not reach the walls of the unnatural cave, it barely lit the map over his knees.
Gaara studied the map intently, tracing the route the trio had taken from Suna. He and his elder siblings, Temari and Kankurou, had been heading northeast for a while. It had been largely uneventful, to annoyance of Gaara and the relief of the other two. Tomorrow, he decided, they would start directly east, toward Konoha. There were some old ruins between their current location and the other city, a great place to find fleshless, maybe even a henshuu or two.
Decision made Gaara clicked off the tiny light and put it away. The darkness became near absolute. Gaara's eyes closed as they weren't doing him much good anyway. He leaned back against the gently sloping wall getting comfortable. The sounds of soft breathing reached his ears. Someone shifted in the dark before settling down again. His siblings had fallen asleep some time ago but the redhead's persistent insomnia had kept him awake.
Sound was amplified in the small cave, it was only big enough for the three young adults to lie comfortably with their bags. Gaara had used his gift to carve out the small space in the earth and cover it again once they were all inside. Years back, it had taken a while to get used to sleeping in an earthen tomb but was the truly the safest place to rest when out in the wide world. The distance to the surface was not great but nothing bigger than earthworms could get in without a great effort and a lot of noise, waking them all.
Gaara's breathing evened out as he relaxed, as much as was possible out here, though he did not sleep. Sleep never came easily to the young man but the loss would not slow him down at all. Plus he was looking forward to tomorrow. Hopefully they would find something interesting. Anything to relieve his boredom would do at this point. But for now he rested, awaiting the dawn.
